In the lush highlands of Embu, Kenya, at an altitude of 1650-1800 meters, lies the Gicherori Washing Station, a beacon of exceptional coffee production. Established in 1994 by the Kibugu Farmers' Co-operative Society, Gicherori collaborates with around 1100 local farmers who cultivate the SL28, Ruiru 11, and Batian varieties. The station is nestled on the slopes of Mount Kenya, benefiting from rich volcanic soil and an annual rainfall of nearly 2000mm, which contribute to the coffee's superior quality.
At Gicherori, the coffee cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness and undergo the meticulous washed process. This involves depulping, fermenting, washing, and drying the beans on raised beds, enhancing their inherent qualities for a clean and vibrant cup. The result is Kenya Embu Gicherori AB Washed coffee, celebrated for its distinctive tasting notes of tomato and lemon.
The co-op emphasizes sustainability and education, aiming to increase production through training seminars and sustainable farming practices. Despite the densely populated surroundings, efforts are made to minimize environmental impact.
From the high altitudes of Embu to coffee cups worldwide, Kenya Embu Gicherori AB Washed delivers a unique and memorable flavor profile. Enjoy this coffee and savor the story of Kenyan tradition and excellence in every sip.
- Please note that our beans are roast on demand.
